EC adopts new guidelines on renewable energy, biofuel support

The European Commission recently announced it has adopted new rules on public support for projects in the field of environmental protection and energy. According to the commission, the guidelines promote a gradual move to market-based support for renewable energy. The new rules are described as aiming to support member states in reaching their 2020 climate targets while addressing market distortions that may result from subsidies granted to renewable energy sources. In addition to renewable electricity generation, the guidelines also address aid given to biofuel facilities.

Project "Biocomplex" received the support of the Governor of the Omsk region

Omsk region governor Viktor Nazarov and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ZAO "GC" Titan "Michael Sutyaginsky signed a cooperation agreement. Previously, the project "Biocomplex" was approved at a meeting of the Presidential Council for modernization and innovative development of Russia, was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on February 4.

Fortum, UPM & Valmet Jointly Developing Advanced Biofuels

Fortum, UPM and Valmet have joined forces to develop a new technology to produce advanced high value lignocellulosic fuels, such as transportation fuels or higher value bio liquids. The idea is to develop catalytic pyrolysis technology for upgrading bio-oil and commercialize the solution.

Biofuel-fired power plants might be included in renewables on wholesale market

Power plants operating on biofuel can be included in the list of renewable energy generating facilities operating on Russia's wholesale electricity and capacity market.This will enable such plants to bid in competitive capacity offtake of renewable energy alongside social and wind power facilities on the condition that general forecast payments by consumers remain unchanged to 2020.

First generation biofuels capped at 6% for EU transportation target

The vote at the European Parliament concerning proposed changes to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) was taken on 11 September. The use of crop-based biofuels for land transportation has been capped at 6% of the total 10% aimed for by 2020, but MEPs did agree to pass a 2.5% share from second generation biofuels. The final figure of 6% is marginally higher than the 5.5% cap mentioned during the lead up to this vote.

Russia's VEB, Bright Capital, Renmatix may pour USD 750m in biomass-to-sugars plants

Russia-based Bright Capital Management, US cellulosic sugars producer Renmatix and Russian state-run lender Vnesheconombank (VEB) will consider a joint investment of up to USD 750 million (EUR 579m) in biomass-to-cellulosic sugars plants.

DSM, Rostekhnologii to cooperate on biotechnology

Royal DSM, the global life sciences and materials sciences company, has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a strategic partnership with Rostekhnologii (Rostec), a Russian State corporation, in the fields of biotechnology and functional materials. The MOU was signed in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in the presence of President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation and Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands.

Bioethanol Production Boosts Alcohol & Sugar Industries in Ukraine

This year the Government continues to develop alternative fuel sources, in particular, to increase the production of bioethanol. It is provided by the State Program of activation of the economic development for 2013-2014. To do this, a number of distilling plants will change the line of business. This in turn will make such businesses profitable; it also helps to reduce dependence on imports of light oil products, as well as ensures compliance with the law on adding biological components in gasoline. This was announced by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Mykola Prysyazhnyuk.
