Russia's 2007 grain crop forecast is lowered to 78.0 million metric tons (mmt), including 44.3 mmt of wheat, 17.1 mmt of barley, and 4.8 mmt of corn, due to drought in the major spring grain producing regions south of Volga Valley and in Rostov oblast. The grain export forecast is 11.8 mmt, including 10.1 mmt of wheat, 1.5 mmt of barley, and 200,000 tons of corn.

Italian sugar company Italia Zuccheri SpA will build two bioethanol facilities in the country in 2010 for a total investment of up to EUR280 million and a combined annual output capacity of 340,000 metric tons, Chief Executive Stefano Montanari said Monday.

BP, Associated British Foods (ABF) and DuPont have plans of building a $400 M global-scale bioethanol facility and a hi-tech demo unit to develop next generation biofuels. BP and ABF subsidiary British Sugar would have a 45% stake each of the bioethanol plant while Dupont will control 10%.

By 2010, Russia will be one of the most important suppliers of biofuels in the EU. Prime costs will be a third lower than those in the EU. Projects exist so far only on paper. Russia does not yet produce bioethanol or biodiesel but the first plants are already being built.
